- on the fuel flap

Valve caps
They’re not just for looks. Valve caps help keep dirt and water out of the valve. Always put them back on when you’re done. If one’s missing, replace it – they’re pennies.
Cold-tyre rule
Tyres should ideally be checked and inflated when they’re cold – meaning the car hasn’t been driven far in the past hour or so. Driving heats the air inside the tyre and makes the pressure read higher than it really is. If you have to inflate after driving, that’s fine – just recheck when the tyres have cooled.

Park close, but safely
Pull up so the airline can reach all four tyres without you stretching it across the car or into traffic. If you can, park so you’re away from the fuel pumps and not blocking anyone.
Set the machine to the right number
Most UK machines have two buttons or a toggle for PSI/bar. Pick the unit your car shows. Type in, for example, 32 PSI or 2.2 bar. Double-check you haven’t mixed them up – it’s an easy mistake.
Remove the valve cap
Unscrew the cap and pop it in your pocket or on top of the wheel. Don’t leave it on the floor – they roll away.
Push the connector on firmly
Push the airline head straight onto the valve until you hear air moving or the machine beeps. If it hisses a lot, reseat it – you want it fully on. Hold it steady until the machine finishes.
Let it inflate
Most forecourt pumps will inflate and then beep, flash or cut off when they reach the target pressure. If the tyre was very low, it might take a little longer. Stay with it while it’s inflating.

Using a 12v/portable compressor

Mixing PSI and bar

Overinflating and not bleeding down
If you go over the number, don’t leave it. Most machines have a bleed button – press it and let the pressure drop to the right figure.
Ignoring a tyre that keeps losing air
If you pump a tyre up to 32 PSI today and it’s back at 24 PSI tomorrow, you haven’t got a pressure problem – you’ve got a tyre problem. That could be a nail, a screw, a cracked rim, corrosion on the bead or a dodgy valve. Get it checked.
Only doing the fronts
Rear tyres do just as much work, and on some cars the rear pressure is actually higher than the front. Always do every wheel.
Not checking after a cold snap
When the temperature drops suddenly, so can your tyre pressure. In winter, check more often – every week is a good habit.
What if it’s run-flat, low-profile or an EV?
Run-flat tyres
